An NYS AIA award of merit building, Hegeman housing is a 161 unit affordable residential project. The five-story building offers studio apartments for formerly homeless individuals with special needs, persons with HIV/AIDS, and low-income residents — many from the Brownsville community. The project was developed by the not-for-profit Common Ground and designed by COOKFOX Architects. The 65,000 square foot building is a sliver LEED certified building with green roof, and multi-tenant community common space. The structural system consists of concrete block and precast plank. The structural design took into account the green roof as well as provisions for a later stage co-generation plant.
