The owners had lost their previous house to both hurricanes Sandy and Irene, and the challenge was to build an unusually high‐strength home with a modest construction budget and operating costs. The solution was to conceptually let nature take its course by providing a vertically. cantilevered house around which the elements would move freely, and provide a new ultralight composite structure of perimeter steel and engineered wood joists. The new house is one of the largest and most successful residential examples of the Hurricane Sandy Recovery, certified LEED, and recipient of a 2017 AIA NJ design award.
