The New York State Department of Corrections (DOCCS) engaged Murray Engineering through our on-call contract with the New York State Office of General Services (OGS) to serve as the prime consultant addressing water infiltration and façade maintenance problems at the Queensboro Correctional Facility.
We addressed water infiltration within the facility and spalled concrete problems on the building’s primary street facades with exposure to the public. The hazardous spall conditions were widespread and numerous, and were the result of inadequate concrete cover provided throughout the building façade. All work had to be completed on an emergency basis due to the hazards posed by the building’s problems.
We specified repair of all conditions followed by application of a robust weatherproof concrete coating designed to restore the requisite rebar weather protection. The weatherproof coating has the added benefit of providing DOCCS with a wide variety of color options to select from.
