The Sorting House

Murray Engineering was engaged first by the United States Post Office, then by the eventual developer chosen to vertically develop three (3) new floors of residential housing on top of the 1940’s Radio City Post Office.

The work included the design and coordination of partial demolition of the existing concrete roof, temporary waterproofing and protection of the active post office operation and limiting construction material weights to minimize impact to the existing post office building.  The building height restrictions and construction logistics presented many challenges for structural assembly and performance.

The addition offers expansive outdoor space with private terraces for 28 of the 30 units as well as a 2,600 square foot common terrace. This new addition brings a refreshing update to this historic radio city post office.
